Update on the construction in Grandpuits

The transformation of the former oil refinery into a new biorefinery in Grandpuits (France), near Paris, is progressing. The project is a joint venture between TotalEnergies (TTE) and SARIA. Starting in 2026, 210,000 tons of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is to be produced at this site.

What is SAF?

SAF is a low-carbon alternative to fossil fuels. Renewable materials such as animal fats and used cooking oils (UCO) can be used as a starting point. Pre-treated animal fats of categories 1 and 2, i.e. high and medium risk animal material, and certain fats of animal origin of category 3 are provided by SARIA as a raw material base. As an expert in the collection and processing of these materials, SARIA will also supply UCO to the biorefinery. SecAnim, ReFood, ecoMotion and SARVAL will provide the material for SAF production in Grandpuits and thereby significantly advance the valorization of its raw materials.

The biorefinery in Grandpuits will produce the sustainable component of SAF. In Gargenville near Paris, fossil fuel is to be added in future because SAF has to date only been approved as a mixture of biokerosene with conventional jet fuel. From Gargenville, SAF will be forwarded to Paris airports as drop-in aviation fuel.

On the right: Gregor Brück (CFO SARIA Ingredients & Energy) and CEO Tim Schwencke and in the middle: Erwan Oges (Regional Sales Director SARIA I&E), Burkhard Althaus (Technical Engineer) and Emmanuel Layous (Commercial Director SARIA I&E), who visited the site in January 2025.

Everything is recycled

When building the new plant on the 200 hectare site at Grandpuits, the focus is not only on new construction, but also on using existing parts of the former oil refinery, which are converted in the interests of sustainability. This means that the hydrodesulphurization plants that were previously used for the desulphurization of mineral oil products can now also be used for the treatment of the new sustainable feedstocks.

The conversion of Grandpuits in figures:

  • 2 million est. working hours for the conversion in total
  • 3,200 m³ foundations
  • 1,200 t steel construction
  • 148,000 dia inch (piping)
  • more than 200 engineers

Outlook

At full capacity, the biorefinery in Grandpuits will be able to produce at least 210,000 tons of SAF per year, 50,000 tons of renewable diesel and 70,000 tons of bionaphtha, which can be used to produce bioplastics. As airlines’ demand for ever larger quantities of SAF is increasing, SAF production at the site is to be increased to 285,000 tons per year in the coming years. With regard to the EU climate targets, airlines are obliged to include at least 6% SAF in jet fuel by 2030, which corresponds to more than 2 million tons of SAF.

TTE has announced an agreement with Air France-KLM to supply up to 1.5 million tons of SAF to the airlines of the Air France-KLM Group over a period of ten years. This means that their fleet will be powered by SARIA feedstock.

SARIA’s UK operations building towards a stronger future

Image

As part of a group-wide commitment to optimizing operational efficiencies and managing overheads, SARIA UK have made a number of important strategic decisions regarding its operations in the UK. Each will help to build a stronger, more collaborative business for the future.

Recently there was a relocation of the team members who were previously based ‘off-site’ at Altum House in Doncaster to the SARIA Head Office in Doncaster – home to ReFood, SARVAL, Nortech Foods, APC GB and SPF UK. The office space in Altum House had been used for several years, but the continuation of the lease no longer met the company’s long-term needs. The decision not only helps to streamline spend but also brings together the entire Doncaster workforce on one single site. This is a positive step forward for the business and a move that aims to inspire further collaboration, teamwork and knowledge share.

To align the operations with the evolving UK market for by-product processing, it was also decided to cease operations of the bubbling fluidised bed (BfB) plant in Widnes. Operating the world’s first fully integrated solution for protein manufacturing, biomass recycling and renewable energy production to the highest possible environmental standards, reduced demand for these services has meant that running the plant is no longer viable. As a result, the BfB will be closed later this year. The wider operations at the Widnes site, which have continued to receive extensive investment into process efficiency, capability and environmental performance, will continue as normal. Where possible, staff will be redeployed elsewhere within the business.

Given the period of change that UK business is undergoing, these decisions are necessary to take advantage of commercial opportunities and improve the overall resilience of the organization. Today’s decisions will help accelerate growth, optimize efficiencies and build an even stronger foundation for the future.

Widnes, located 22.5 km from Liverpool, is home to a number of SARIA operations. In addition to the SARVAL rendering plant for Category 3 material and the BfB plant, there is also a large SecAnim location and a ReFood site that started operating in 2014 and has its own biogas processing plant.

SARIA Germany acquires 100% of SARVAL Fischermanns

Image

SARIA acquired 100% of the shares in SARVAL Fischermanns GmbH on January 1, 2025.

Recap

In 2017, SARVAL and Fischermanns decided to merge their activities in the processing of category 3 animal by-products. As part of the merger, SARIA took a majority stake in the newly formed company called SARVAL Fischermanns GmbH.

SARVAL Fischermanns in Germany

The Fischermanns company brought two new sites into the group. One was the food fat smelter in Duisburg, which ceased production in 2023 but has since continued to be used as a transshipment point and distribution center for raw materials. The other was the site of the former Fischermanns subsidiary Kurt Fulling Tierprodukte GmbH in Dissen. This site is still used today as a production facility for animal proteins and fats and is the headquarters of the German SARVAL business.

In Marl and Hopfgarten, SARVAL Fischermanns GmbH also produces protein meals and fats under the SARVAL brand, which are used as high-quality ingredients in the pet food and animal feed industries, but also as technical lubricants.

EquiAdieu reinvents collection at SecAnim France

Image

Launched in 2021, the EquiAdieu.fr website offers owners of deceased equines (horses, donkeys, ponies, etc.) a secure online collection solution. In 2024, the service proved its efficiency by exceeding the €1.5 million turnover threshold, contributing to customer satisfaction and SecAnim’s security mission.

An accessible, easy-to-use service

EquiAdieu is SARIA France’s first e-commerce website dedicated to private individuals. It enables owners to manage the collection of their deceased animals themselves: by registering online, specifying the collection conditions and paying for the rendering.

A Service to secure collection conditions

Safety is a fundamental aspect of the service. Before the collection, owners validate the collection rules online (animal accessible, clear of an electrical zone, etc.), thus guaranteeing compliance with the conditions before the SecAnim collection agent arrives.

Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, the website allows owners to make their request at any time, with collection times set at less than 2 working days, as required by the regulations.

Finally, the online payment system offers secure management of the entire payment process. No more payments by check or in cash, the accounting department integrates the transactions directly to the business accounts!

A friendly helpline delivered by SecAnim Team

Many owners are devastated by the loss of their horse and are looking for reassurance. To complement the online service, Emmanuelle Thomas, who works at the SecAnim’s plant in Plouvara and is responsible for SecAnim’s customer relations, offers a telephone helpline to support owners during this difficult time. She explains: “The owners have a very emotional bond with their pets, as they can live up to 30 years. That’s why an empathetic service is essential. We also have to bear in mind that equine owners are rarely confronted with the death of an animal. In order to comply with collection rules (such as not leaving the animal in the middle of a field), we arrange contact with the local authority or neighboring farmers so that the animals can be taken to an accessible location.”

Future developments

Since the launch of EquiAdieu, the service has been steadily improved, in particular with the upcoming development of a customer area where requests are tracked, and paid invoices are automatically provided. The aim is to save time and make the service even smoother for customers.

Thanks to the work of the collection, customer relations, accounts and IT teams, who have developed a functional platform and a high-quality customer service, EquiAdieu has established itself as a genuine support for owners of bereaved equines, while ensuring an impeccable collection service within the SARIA Group in France.

Emmanuelle Thomas manages the telephone hotline at SecAnim in Plouvara.

SecAnim Spain starts with innovative storage system

Image

At the end of 2024, SecAnim Spain joined forces with SACE to develop a pioneering system for the storage of animal by-products from livestock farms.

Benefits

As key players in the sector, SACE and SARIA have combined their technical expertise and experience to develop a refrigerated storage system for carcasses that is quick and easy to install. This “Sistema de Almacenamiento Refrigerado” (SAR) has been developed with the aim of optimizing the logistical needs of the traditional collection system, offering farms greater biosecurity and improving the quality of the raw material.

Thanks to the cooling function, SAR allows collection intervals to be extended. This not only makes logistics more flexible, but also saves driving and personnel costs as well as working hours.

The closed and cooled container system minimizes the formation of odours, especially at high temperatures. At the same time, insect contamination is also reduced, which in turn has a positive impact on the biosecurity of the livestock farms, minimizing the risk of infection or the spread of disease and ensuring compliance with the strictest biosecurity regulations.

The quality of the raw product is also improved by SAR. Heat and storage-related fluctuations can be better managed and controlled, which in turn has a positive impact on the processing of category 1 & 2 materials and the quality of the resulting end products.

Next steps

Although SAR is still in the R&D phase and improvements are being researched to make it even more efficient, it has already been patented. Word of its innovative nature has also spread in the sector, as the first authorities and administrative institutions are already showing interest. The Department of Agriculture of Catalonia, for example, has requested a feasibility report on implementation the storage system in various livestock farms, primarily to assess its sustainability potential.

Another example of SAR’s recognition is the fact that the storage system has won the “Technological Improvement” prize awarded by the International Fair for Animal Production (FIGAN). The FIGAN Technological Innovations and Improvements Contest recognize products and services developed by companies in the livestock sector. In March 2025, the jury will award the prize at the agricultural fair in Zaragoza, one of the most important events in Spain.

Congratulations to the entire SARIA team who worked on this project!

Daka SecAnim gives insights from Agromek and NutriFair

Image

Daka recently exhibited at the Danish trade fairs Agromek in November 2024 and NutriFair in January 2025. This was a fantastic opportunity to speak directly with farmers and gain insights into what matters most to them in their collaboration with Daka SecAnim.

What are Agromek and NutriFair?

Agromek is Northern Europe’s largest agricultural fair, where the entire industry gathers to showcase new technology, network, and share knowledge.  NutriFair is a specialized trade fair for livestock producers focusing on feed, stable equipment, and animal welfare.

Dialogue at the trade fair delivers results

At Agromek, Daka asked farmers what was most important to them, and the answer was clear: fast collection. Participation in the survey was rewarded with the chance to win a culinary prize.

At the NutriFair, the approach was repeated to engage visitors in a dialogue about their most important needs. In addition to sweets for everyone, there was also a fun competition where the winners could choose between a delicious cake roll or a cold cuts platter.

The combined results from both fairs confirm that customers of Daka appreciate:

  1. Fast collection – Efficiency is everything.
  2. Good digital service via app – A user-friendly app is essential in daily operations.
  3. Flexibility in registration and collection – The ability to plan collections as needed adds significant value.

These insights are important for Daka to ensure that the company continuously deliver the best service to its customers. Many thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of the trade fairs.
